DOTC Sec. Abaya is a coward and a liar

13 Aug

Department of Transportation and Communications Sec. Joseph Emilio Abaya’s MRT ride from Ortigas station to North Avenue station at 1:00 in the afternoon is one of the worst publicity gimmicks in recent years.

He wanted to prove that riding the MRT is safe, but rode the train system at a time when commuter volume is generally low and in stations where commuter volume is even lower. He is a coward and a liar.

We dare Sec. Abaya to take the “Ride the MRT during Rush Hour” challenge, which millions of commuters go through every workday, during hours when the safety of the train system is at its most fragile.

Many workers are being penalized on the basis of tardiness as a result of heavy traffic along Edsa, long queues at the MRT, and the train system’s massive breakdowns in recent months.

It is disgusting that instead of taking the steps necessary to improve the MRT, the Aquino government is engaging in cheap publicity gimmicks to make it appear that the MRT is safe and efficient.

It is revolting that the government is taking advantage of the MRT’s problems to push for a fare hike. The said problems are a result of privatization and the fare hike is still in the direction of privatization.

We reiterate our calls to the government: Cancel the contract with the MRT’s private contractor and take over the MRT. Uphold its mandate of providing a safe, efficient and affordable mass tranport system.
