Sobra Na, Protesta Na! People Power vs MRT-LRT Fare Hike

23 Feb

Amid the possible impending approval of a P5.00 to P15.00 fare increase in MRT and LRT, Riles Network called on the public to support and participate in voicing out our opposition to these proposed hikes.

“We are called upon to heighten our protest against the MRT and LRT fare hike. Everybody should join the protest,” said Sammy Malunes, spokesperson of Riles Network.

Malunes announced that Riles Network will be spearheading a cyber-protest campaign to drum up support for the junking of the fare hike.

Among the protest forms in the Internet that the Riles Network will be launching this week: (1) Calling on all users of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to express their opposition to the MRT and LRT fare hike through these social networking sites; (2) Calling on Twitter users to help make LRTMRT fare hike a trending topic in Twitter by putting the hashtag (#mrtlrtfare) in their tweets; (3) Calling on everyone to show their outrage by sending emails to the Light Rail Transit Administration (, Department of Transportation and Communication (, and President Simeon Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III ( ; and circulating a protest icon through the social networking sites.

“As demonstrated in the uprising against the Mubarak regime in Egypt, the Internet can become a useful tool in uniting the people against tyrannical and oppressive measures. This is the time for us to make use of this tool against the oppressive fair hikes,” explained Malunes.

Riles Network also called on the MRT and LRT commuters to join in the protest by wearing black ribbons or armbands when riding the MRT and LRT.

“We will be setting up protest centers in various MRT and LRT stations where commuters can sign the petition against the fare hike,” explained Malunes.

Malunes also called on the public to join the mobilization on February 24 at the DOTC building in Ortigas Avenue, where the LRTA is scheduled to meet. Militant organizations will also be holding a protest march to the Edsa Shrine in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Edsa People Power Uprising. They are also expected to join in the protest against the fare hike.

“Without a significant wage increase in years for the working people, an MRT-LRT fare hike will be too much to bear for us commuters. We have to protest this grave injustice. Let us show to the Aquino administration the true essense of People Power,” concluded Malunes. ###
