People Power vs. MRT-LRT Fare Hike!

23 Feb

An Urgent Call to Action

On February 24, the Light Rail Transit Administration Board of Directors will hold a meeting to approve the P5.00 to P15.00 fare increase in the MRT and LRT.

No way are we going to allow this to happen.

  • The fare hike will be too much to bear for us consumers, especially as there is no significant wage increase in recent years.
  • Current fare rates and earnings from stalls and advertisements in the train stations can already cover MRT’s and LRT’s maintenance costs.
  • Increase in fares will only go to paying government debts to big corporations and banks.
  • The train system is going to be privatized, hence the fare increase will make MRT and LRT attractive to prospective buyers.
  • Mass transportation should be subsidized by government.

We, the people, must claim our right to put a halt to this. “We are the boss,” aren’t we? So we command the P-Noy government to heed our call and put a stop to the impending increase.

Let our rage be heard NOW, before it is too late:

  1. Join the massive cyberprotest that is sure to reach Malacañang
  • Circulate the image above through social networking sites – Facebook, Twitter, Friendster, among others. Reach out to as many people as you can and ask, plead, urge them to spread the message and icon to as many contacts as possible. Pausukin ang social networking sites sa ating protesta!
  • Help make LRT-MRT fare hike a trending topic in Twitter by discussing the issue and using the hashtag #mrtlrtfare in your tweets.
  • Send emails/texts to the following with the words “I PROTEST THE MRT/LRT FARE HIKE!”
  • Light Rail Transit Administration:
  • Department of Transportation and Communication:
  • President Simeon Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III:
  1. Wear a black ribbon/armband when riding the MRT and LRT
  2. Sign the petition against the MRT and LRT fare hike
  3. Wear the “I Protest the MRT-LRT Fare Hike” sticker
  4. Join us on February 24 at the DOTC building in Ortigas Avenue near the POEA building, where the LRTA board of directors is scheduled to meet. We need hundreds and thousands of warm bodies to fill up the streets and make this our day of outrage.

Tama na! Sobra na! Stop the MRT-LRT fare hike!
